Makassar Car Rental Prices 2026: What Is Included

This typically covers a 12-hour day with the vehicle and driver; fuel, tolls, parking, and driver’s meals are usually extra.

My name is Nurul Asrianti Sulfahmi. As the Routes & Pricing Editor here at Makassar Car Rental, I maintain the rate sheets for our core destinations: Toraja, Bira, Malino, and Maros. Part of my job is ensuring our pricing is transparent, especially for international, corporate, and cruise ship guests who need clarity before they arrive.

Many questions we receive are about what a rental price truly covers. A quoted number can be misleading if you do not understand the local standards for inclusions and exclusions. This guide explains exactly how car rental pricing in Makassar works, what our quotes include, and what you should expect to pay for separately. We believe in clear, upfront communication. There are no hidden fees when you book directly with us.

Published Market Rates by Vehicle Class

The daily rental rate in Makassar depends almost entirely on the vehicle you choose. Larger, more premium vehicles command higher prices. Self-drive options are available for smaller MPVs, but most visitors, particularly those unfamiliar with local traffic, opt for a vehicle with an experienced local driver.

Here are the typical starting prices for a 12-hour rental within Makassar city limits, based on our regular market surveys.

Vehicle Class Typical Use Rate (with Driver) Source & Date Verified
Toyota Avanza / Daihatsu Xenia 1-3 passengers, city use Quoted on request –

This option requires a valid driving permit and a security deposit. You can see details of our entire vehicle selection on our fleet page.

What Does the ’12-Hour Day’ Actually Mean?

The standard rental period for a car with a driver in Makassar is a “12-hour day”. This is a block of time, not a measure of distance. Your 12 hours start from the agreed-upon pick-up time. For example, if you schedule a pick-up at 8:00 AM, the service concludes at 8:00 PM.

This 12-hour window is designed for a full day of activities within the Makassar metropolitan area (Makassar, Gowa, Maros). It is sufficient for most business meetings, city tours, or culinary trips.

What happens if you need more time?
Service that extends beyond the 12-hour block is subject to an overtime charge. The industry standard, which we follow, is to charge 10% of the daily rental rate for each additional hour or part thereof. So, if your day extends to 13 hours, one hour of overtime applies. If it extends to 13 hours and 15 minutes, two hours of overtime apply. This fee compensates the driver for their extended working hours. It is always best to plan your day to fit within the 12-hour window or to budget for potential overtime if you have a late dinner or evening event planned.

Are Fuel, Tolls, Parking and Driver Meals Included?

This is the most critical question for understanding your total cost. In almost all standard quotes from operators in Makassar, these four items are excluded from the base daily rate unless you specifically request an “all-in” package.

Let’s break them down.

Vehicle Fuel

The base rental price does not include petrol. The standard procedure is that the car is provided to you with a full tank of fuel. At the end of your rental period (whether a single day or multiple days), you are responsible for returning the car with a full tank. You can do this by stopping at a petrol station (a SPBU or Pom Bensin) with the driver before you are dropped off. Alternatively, our operations team can refill the vehicle and add the fuel cost to your final bill.

Toll Roads

Makassar has toll roads, most notably the Ir. Sutami Toll Road which connects Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) to the city centre. Toll fees are paid by the client as they are incurred. The driver will handle the payment using a pre-paid card, and you can reimburse them directly in cash.

Parking Fees

Parking is not included. Throughout Makassar, you will find paid parking at malls (like Trans Studio Mall), hotels, tourist sites, and the airport. These fees are typically small but are the client’s responsibility. You can give cash to the driver to pay the attendant upon exiting a car park.

Driver’s Meals & Accommodation

For a standard 12-hour day within Makassar, the client is expected to cover the driver’s meals. This is handled in one of two ways: you can invite the driver to eat with you (which is not expected), or you can provide a meal allowance. For multi-day trips that require the driver to stay overnight outside of Makassar, an additional overnight fee applies. This covers the driver’s lodging and meals. You pay for fuel, tolls, parking, and the driver’s meal allowance separately as you go. This offers flexibility but less predictable costs.

  • An All-In Package quote includes the vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls, parking, and driver’s meal allowance for a specific, pre-agreed itinerary within the city. The all-in option provides complete budget certainty. You pay one fixed price for the day’s transport. This is the preferred choice for most of our corporate clients and international visitors who want a seamless experience without needing to handle small cash payments throughout the day. When you plan your trip with our team, we can provide both types of quotes so you can choose what works best for you. To get a clear all-in quote for your specific plan, you can request a quote from our desk. We often finalise details over WhatsApp for speed and convenience.

How Are Out-of-Town and Multi-Day Trips Priced?

Pricing for destinations outside the immediate Makassar area is calculated differently. Trips to the highlands of Tana Toraja or the beaches of Bira are not based on a simple 12-hour daily rate. They are priced as a complete package based on your itinerary.

Why the difference?
Long-distance travel involves significantly more fuel, wear and tear on the vehicle, and requires the driver to be away from home for several days. A trip to Tana Toraja, for example, is a journey of over 310 kilometres and takes 8-10 hours of driving each way. A trip to Bira is around 200 kilometres and takes 5-6 hours.

Our package price for these routes accounts for:

  • The total distance and estimated fuel consumption.
  • The driver’s time, including driving and standby days.
  • The driver’s accommodation and meals for the entire duration of the trip (using the standard overnight allowance as a base).
  • Any specific route challenges or tolls.

Shorter out-of-town trips, such as a day trip to the Malino highlands (90 km) or the Rammang-Rammang karst formations in Maros (40 km), are also quoted on an itinerary basis rather than a strict 12-hour clock.

Understanding Airport Transfer and Standby Packages

We offer specific pricing for services originating at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG).

  • Airport Transfer: This is a fixed-price, one-way service from the airport to a single location (e.g., a hotel) in Makassar city, or vice-versa. The price includes the vehicle, driver, and fuel for that specific trip.
  • Airport Package (with Standby): This is for guests who need the car for more than just a simple drop-off. For example, you might land at 10:00 AM, want to go to your hotel to check in, and then proceed directly to a lunch meeting. In this case, we would provide a package that covers the transfer plus a set number of hours of standby time. This is often more cost-effective than booking a full 12-hour day if you only need the car for 4-5 hours upon arrival.

We can also help coordinate airport assistance services. For VIP guests, we can arrange police escort (Patwal), though this is always subject to official approval from the regional police authority (Polda Sulsel).

Paying in Rupiah, Using Cards, and Deposits

All transactions in Indonesia must be settled in the local currency, the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While we may provide quotes in other currencies for reference, the final invoice will be in IDR.

We accept payment via bank transfer and major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard). Please be aware that payments made by credit card are subject to a standard bank processing fee, which is typically 2-3%.

To secure a booking, especially for multi-day itineraries or for a high-demand vehicle like a Toyota Alphard, we require a deposit. The balance is then payable before or on the first day of service. This is a standard practice that confirms your reservation in our schedule.

Why You Should Always Get a Written Quote

The single most important step in hiring a car in Makassar is to get a detailed, written confirmation of your booking. Verbal agreements can lead to misunderstandings.

A formal quote from Makassar Car Rental will clearly state:

  • The exact vehicle type.
  • The service dates and times.
  • The agreed-upon rate.
  • A precise list of what is included (e.g., “Vehicle, Driver, 12-hours/day”).
  • A precise list of what is excluded (e.g., “Fuel, Tolls, Parking, Driver Meals”).

This document protects both you and us. It ensures there are no surprises at the end of your trip. It is our commitment to transparency. For our Indonesian-speaking clients, we provide all the same information on our dedicated page for harga rental mobil Makassar.

Planning a trip can be complex. My role is to make the transport component as simple and predictable as possible. If you have any questions or would like to build a custom itinerary, please feel free to request a quote. Our team is ready to assist you via email or WhatsApp.

What is the standard payment process for a multi-day car rental?

For multi-day bookings, we typically require a deposit (usually 30-50% of the total cost) to confirm the reservation. The remaining balance is due on or before the first day of service. Payment can be made via bank transfer or credit card.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) for self-drive?

Yes. For any self-drive rental in Indonesia, you must have a valid driving licence from your home country plus a valid International Driving Permit. We will need to see both original documents before releasing the vehicle. Please check our full terms on our FAQ page.

Can I hire a car and driver for just a few hours?

Yes, half-day (typically 6-hour) rentals are possible, subject to availability. These are ideal for short errands or a dedicated airport transfer with a stop. The price is quoted on request and is not simply half the full-day rate, as the vehicle is still committed for that part of the day.
